Who is Tony Bernazard?

Amidst the chaos and unrelenting waves of injuries and shoddy fundamentals that have plagued this 2009 New York Mets season, another character has emerged from the fray. A galvanizing force that has united the legions of blue and orange fans in their unrelenting hatred for his callous style and enigmatic stranglehold over top team brass.
I am talking about Tony Bernazard.
OK, now that you are finished scratching your head in confusion, know that Bernazard is a “VP of Player Development” and allegedly carries as much favor with owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon as General Manager Omar Minaya, if not more. Did I mention that Bernazard might also be more than slightly mentally unbalanced?
Always Amazin’ runs down the litany of Bernazard’s quirks in exceptional fashion, including:
- Removing his shirt and challenging a player from Double A to a fight in the clubhouse (!)
- Creating a scene over the seating arrangement of certain scouts at CitiField
- Apparently nearly getting into an altercation with closer Frankie Rodriguez
The Mets now say that they are “investigating” Bernazard’s behavior, and undoubtedly after letting the issue drag on for at least another week they will handle the matter in their typically inept fashion (seriously, guys, if you want to hire a decent PR/Marketing guy call me!).
In honor of Tony’s rather unique style, a new trending topic has emerged on Twitter, #BernazardFacts — a compendium of the strange and unusual matters the controversial figure may or may not have been involved in. Not ever willing to let a good joke pass on by, I contributed several of my own, listed below for posterity’s sake:
- Tony Bernazard moved the fences back at CitiField cause homeruns are for wussies. #BernazardFacts
- The home run apple can only lift once every 3 min because Tony Bernazard carries it on his shoulders. #BernazardFacts
- The account that allegedly uploaded the Erin Andrews video? Not saying who, but the initials were “TB” #BernazardFacts
- Tony Bernazard was the driving force behind the trade of Lenny Dykstra for Juan Samuel. #BernazardFacts
- Tony Bernazard thinks Ugueth Urbina and Julio Machado are merely “misunderstood” #BernazardFacts
Truly, a remarkable, talented, and charismatic man indeed.
