What Is Going On???

The semi-famous utterance above originated with Joe Schmo himself, Matt Kennedy Gould, as he looked around and found himself the only hint of reality ensnared within an otherwise completely fabricated world. Looking around at today’s incredibly whacked-out political scene, I can’t help but ask the same question. Did the rest of the world take stupid pills while nobody was looking?
We can start with the current Powers That Be. Apparently, our not-so-fair president has found himself completely overwhelmed by the volume and responsibility of the business that goes along with being the leader of the entire world. I’m sure many Oval Officeholders have privately felt a similar and understandable emotional response, it’s just rather unusual and perhaps frightening to hear it proclaimed out in the open in such a manner.
Meanwhile, the administration staff is not proving itself very up-to-the-task either, alienating world leaders on all sides via cheap, poorly thought out gifts ranging from a virtual Blockbuster Video card to an “Overcharge” Button. All this and we haven’t even factored in terrible public policy and a stimulus plan/budget that addresses none of the core deficiencies in the current economic system and could perhaps even prolong the ongoing malaise. I guess this would have to be expected, though, when you fill your cabinet with tax cheats who probably don’t even understand the basics of how wealth is created.
Meanwhile, the loyal opposition continues to tear itself apart in cannibalistic frenzy. Is Rush Limbaugh the de-facto leader of the American Conservative Movement, or is it unwise to hand the keys of public debate into a thrice-married, over-indulgent, former pill popper? Is anyone who dares to disagree with the base a turncoat RINO?
Meanwhile (see a theme emerging?), even at the local levels the NY GOP is about to enter into yet another deal with the devil himself, a move that will surely leave the party lying alone in bed the morning after, another jilted lover used and abused for the sake of expediency and cold hard cash.
Maybe it’s all a consequence of a changing world psychology, an uncertainty in an age of post-mutually assured destruction and no great wars to fight. Or perhaps it’s just information overload in the days of instant gratification via the Internet. But it’s definitely weird, ain’t it? Like the whole world is going cuckoo, and no rational solutions or alternatives are anywhere to be found.
